Taping the mannequin

Taping a mannequin is how to begin any garment construction project, when making a garment to fit a mannequin.

My brief for this semester is to produce a strapless bodice using boning. Therefore it is important for the garment to be fitted to the body.

In order to get accurate measurements I practiced taping a size 12 Kennet & Lindsell Ltd Concept 2008 mannequin. Pinning tape in the areas where measurements are needed to begin bodice work. For example the waist line, top and bottom hip lines, center front and center back and also the bust line.

Accurate measurements were then taken from the mannequin due to being able to place the tape measure along the black tape. I intend to use these measurements to draft a basic bodice block, which will later be adapted.

Measurements taken:

  • Bust- 88cm
  • Waist - 71.5cm
  • Hips - 95.7cm
  • Nape to waist - 40.7cm
  • Waist to hip - 18.7cm
  • Top Hip - 92.5cm
  • Nape to Bust Point - 34.5cm

  1. Great work Jenny - you could link the points to the Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO's) for the Module - Developing Pattern & Garment Technology.
Include the measurements taken, it is a working document - should be detailed not vague. Good work, just review the points and add depth.
